About Vena Gifted Magnet

Vena Gifted/High Ability Magnet

The Gifted/High Ability Magnet Center at Vena Avenue Elementary School was created in 1979 to minimize the effects of racial isolation and fulfill the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and high achieving students.  The magnet consists of 6 classes operating within Vena Avenue Elementary, from 1st through 5th grade.

The gifted magnet program provides a comprehensive core curriculum differentiated by the students’ talents, needs, and interests, various learning modes, state standards for instruction, and Gifted/Talented compliance.

Approximately 40% of the students are identified gifted.  The remaining students not identified gifted were recommended by their principals, teachers, or advisors as being high achievers based on performance on standardized tests and meet LAUSD higher level thinking skills criteria.

Vena is organized under the 60:40 integration model.  A concerted effort is made to remain culturally diverse and to identify and recruit students from varied racial, ethnic, language, and cultural backgrounds.
