Read Across America Celebration

Vena Avenue Elementary is once again participating in the National Education Association’s Read Across America project--a literacy campaign designed to motivate children to read by making it fun.  We will all be celebrating the joy of reading and honoring Dr. Seuss from March 28 to April 1, 2016 with several activities:

  1. Picnic with students reading out on the yard on Friday, April 1 @1:45 to 2:15 P.M.
  2. “Dress Up Like a Dr. Seuss Character” during the picnic (see costume guidelines below)
  3. Classroom Door Decorating Contest to promote reading
  4. “Guess the Mystery Reader” Contest
  5. A presentation of Vena’s Cat in the Hat video featuring Vena students
  6. “Story Time at the Library” with Ms. Richardson

There will be a Read Across America form in this week's Thursday Folder (March 10). Please read it and return it to your child's teacher if you would like to help us make this a memorable event.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Dr. Seuss Character Costume Guidelines

1. Wear a full costume that looks like a character in a Dr. Seuss book. Wearing just a hat or a wig without wearing the matching outfit will not earn a prize. (For example, if you are going to be the Cat in the Hat, you need to wear a black outfit, with a bowtie, a hat, and maybe even ears and a tail...)

2. Your costume should show that you tried your best to look like the character. Don’t worry if it’s not exactly like the character. Just make sure it’s pretty close to what the character would wear.

3. You should come to school with your costume already on.

Start planning your costume. We can't wait to see Dr. Seuss's characters come to life!
