Welcome to Vena, a Distinguished School!

Vena Avenue Elementary & Gifted/High-Ability Magnet has been named a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. Only 5% of California schools are awarded each year following a selection process. This award identifies and honors schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap. Every student at Vena has access to high-quality educational experiences. Our school administration, staff, and families work together to make sure that each child is "prepared for success."  Roar out with pride, Vena Tigers!

Read Across Vena Celebration

Vena Avenue Elementary is once again participating in the National Education Association’s Read Across America project--a literacy campaign designed to motivate children to read by making it fun.  We will all be celebrating the joy of reading and honoring Dr. Seuss from March 12 to 16 with several activities:

  • "Read Across Vena" with students reading out on the yard on Friday, March 16 @1:45 to 2:15 P.M. Parents are welcome to read with their children!
  • “Dress Up Like a Dr. Seuss Character” during the "Read Across Vena" event (see costume guidelines below)
  • Classroom Door Decorating Contest to promote reading
  • “Guess the Mystery Reader/Book” Contest
  • A presentation of Vena’s "Horton Hatches the Egg" video featuring Vena students
  • Cake (right after the video showing) to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday
  • Reading Star Certificates for students who have shown growth on their STAR/Accelerated Reader tests
  • “Story Time at the Library” with Mr. Quevedo

Please take time to read with your child and celebrate reading at school and at home.

Another way to make this Reading Celebration a memorable one is to buy our very own "Read Across Vena"Tt-shirt, designed by Mr. Gonzales. This special shirt will only be available for a week--from Monday February 26 to Friday March 2. Please click here for details.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Dr. Seuss Character Costume Guidelines

1. Wear a full costume that looks like a character in a Dr. Seuss book. Wearing just a hat or a wig without wearing the matching outfit will not earn a prize. (For example, if you are going to be the Cat in the Hat, you need to wear a black outfit, with a bowtie, a hat, and maybe even ears and a tail...)

2. Your costume should show that you tried your best to look like the character. Don’t worry if it’s not exactly like the character. Just make sure it’s pretty close to what the character would wear.

3. You should come to school with your costume already on.

Start planning your costume. We can't wait to see Dr. Seuss's characters come to life!

Tree People

Vena Avenue celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd by planting 8 trees on  the school grounds.  The event was hosted by Tree People who planned and supplied all the materials. Fifth grade students and their families were invited to assist as a way to commemorate their last year at Vena. It was a wonderful experience for everyone who attended.
